Gem Mining
Franklin North Carolina is known as the “Gem Mining Capital Of The World” and it’s a great family activity and popular among children in particular.
Most gem mines operate from early Spring through late Fall. Be sure to wear old clothes. For a list of locations and gem mining map, click here.
- Rose Creek Mine & Rock Shop. Operating since 1952, Rose Creek Mine is one of 3 state licensed gem mines in Macon County, North Carolina and this is my family’s top pick. Open from 9-5, between April – October, but closed on Wednesdays and Sundays except in July. Check the website and Facebook page for updates.
- Mason’s Ruby & Sapphire Mine dates to before 1897 and is one of the most popular “dig your own” gem mines. It’s open 7 days a week from April 1st to October 1st.
