Outdoor Activities for the Adventurous

Catalooche Ski Area

Skiing, Snow Boarding and Snow Tubing

Cataloochi Ski Area is the closest ski resort (just over 50 miles away) in Maggie Valley. It offers 50 skiable acres for beginners, intermediates and expert skiers. The season begins in late Oct/early November through to March each year. You can rent equipment and there’s a shop too. The resort also offers Tube World four miles away from the ski area. You are advised to complete this release form to save time on arrival.See directions on the website that warn you that Google Maps is the only way to find Cataloochi (a problem since Google Maps hasn’t yet found Buttercup Haven.) However, follow these Google Maps directions from Franklin to get there. We recommend a stopping to eat in Waynesville (lunch or dinner) if you haven’t been to Waynesville. This quaint town is definitely worth a visit and offers lots of great eating options.

Nantahala National Forest

Lake Nantahala (Fishing & Boating)

Lake Nantahala is one of the most pristine lakes in North Carolina. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains in Macon County, the Lake has a surface area of 1,605 acres; sits at over 3,000 feet above sea level and boasts over 20 miles of shoreline. About half of the lake sits within the Nantahala National Forest; the other half is surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Recommended by a former guest at Buttercup Haven. “We would like to recommend Lakes End Marina on Lake Nantahala for boat rentals. We rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon and the lake was beautiful.”

Shopping & Dining

Waynesville

Waynesville Shopping & Dining

Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Waynesville is the oldest town in Haywood County and a great place to shop and dine. Unique shops line main street where you’ll find the reknowned Mast General Store offering fashions, comfortable footwear, outdoor and travel gear, rocking chairs and over 500 old-fashioned candies. Waynesville offers arts and handmade Appalachian crafts, home furnishings, clothing and unique gifts. It’s also one of our favorite places to dine. The Sweet Onion is a local favorite, but there are many great options to choose from. See Yelp’s list with diner reviews.
